Genuine vs Aftermarket: How to Match Stihl-Compatible Parts to Your Machine

Aftermarket parts keep thousands of Stihl, Honda and Chinese-brand machines working in Mauritius at a fraction of dealer prices — but only when the part actually matches. "Compatible with" is not guesswork when you know where to look. This guide explains how to read your machine, how to use OEM part numbers, and where aftermarket makes sense.

What "Compatible With" Actually Means

A compatible part is made to the same dimensions and specification as the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) part — same mounting holes, same shaft diameter, same thread — without carrying the brand on the box. Reputable aftermarket manufacturers produce these for the most common machine families, which is why a single recoil starter or ignition coil can fit a whole series: FS120, FS200, FS250, FS300, FS350 and FS400 share most service parts, as do the MS170/MS180 and MS231/MS241/MS251 chainsaw families.

Finding Your Machine's Model Number

The model number is on a sticker or plate on the engine housing — on brush cutters usually near the shaft mount, on chainsaws near the handle or under the recoil cover. If the sticker is gone, look for a stamped number on the crankcase. Photograph whatever you find before ordering; a photo of the old part next to a ruler is the second-best identifier when numbers have worn away completely.

OEM Part Numbers: the Reliable Shortcut

Every genuine part carries a number — for Stihl it looks like 4134 141 0300 (an FS120 air filter) or 4140 130 0625. If you can read the number on your old part, or find it in the machine's parts list online, matching becomes certain: a listing that quotes the same OEM number will fit. This is the fastest route when your machine is an unusual variant or an import.

Where Aftermarket Makes Sense — and Where to Be Careful

Service parts are the safest aftermarket buy: air filters, fuel filters, spark plugs, gaskets, diaphragms, recoil starters, ignition coils and trimmer heads. These are simple, dimensioned parts where a good aftermarket unit performs identically. Be more careful with safety-critical or precision parts — brake bands, clutch components on professional saws, and crankshaft seals on heavily used machines — and always replace fasteners like muffler bolts with the correct grade.

When Numbers Are Missing: Measure

Trimmer heads and Chinese 43cc/52cc engine parts are the usual cases where no model number exists. For trimmer heads, measure the gearbox shaft thread — most straight-shaft machines use M10 x 1.25 left-hand thread — and check the rotation direction. For Chinese engines, the CG430/CG520 pattern covers nearly all 43cc and 52cc units sold in Mauritius, so parts such as coils, carburetors and recoil starters interchange freely between brands.

The Bottom Line

Match the model family, confirm with an OEM number or a measurement, and aftermarket parts deliver the same service life for routine repairs. If you are unsure, send us the model number or a photo — confirming a match takes us minutes and costs you nothing.
