The Seasonal Tune-Up: Parts to Replace Before the Busy Season
Every cutting season in Mauritius starts the same way: machines come out of storage, and half of them run rough or refuse to start on the first job of the year. A tune-up before the season — not after the first breakdown — costs less than an hour of lost work. The core of it is four inexpensive parts, and a kit puts them all in one box.
Why a Tune-Up Pays
Service parts degrade whether the machine runs or not. Air filters load up with dust and oil film, spark plugs erode a little every hour, fuel filters collect sludge from the bottom of the tank, and primer bulbs harden in the heat. None of these failures announce themselves in storage — they show up as hard starting and weak power exactly when the grass is at its worst. Replacing the small parts together, on your schedule, is far cheaper than a mid-job breakdown.
The Core Four
Air filter: the engine's lungs. A choked filter richens the mixture, wastes fuel and washes oil off the bore. Felt and fleece filters are replace-only — once grey and stiff, they are done. Spark plug: the BPMR7A and CMR6H patterns cover most handheld 2-strokes; check the gap at 0.5 mm on the new plug before fitting. Fuel filter: the small weighted filter inside the tank — cheap insurance against every carburetor fault that stale fuel causes. Primer bulb: if it has gone stiff or shows hairline cracks, replace it before it splits mid-job.
While You Are In There
With the covers off, check the fuel lines for softness or cracking, tighten the muffler and handle fasteners, and look at the starter cord for fraying near the handle. Inspect the trimmer head eyelets for wear and the guard mounting for cracks. Ten minutes of looking catches the failures that otherwise arrive in week two of the season.
A Schedule for Mauritian Conditions
For machines in regular use: tune-up at the start of the main growing season, a filter-and-plug check monthly, and a second full tune-up mid-season for contractor machines on daily work. After cyclone-season storage, always fit a fresh plug and fresh fuel before judging anything else — most "dead after storage" machines are just fouled plugs and stale mix.
Which Kit Fits Your Machine
Tune-up kits are matched by machine family. The FS55/FS38/FS45/KM55/HS45 series shares one kit — felt air filter, fuel filter and plug. The larger FS120/FS200/FS250/FS300/FS350/FS400 family shares another, with the larger cartridge air filter. Chainsaw families have their own filters; match by model number and the kit fits first time.
